Lurker no more. One of my favorite LiveJournals has gone Friends Only, so I must finally get an account here. Fortunately, I've been dying to put down some thoughts on my newest obsession. Two birds, one stone, and all that.

My obsessions come in decades. In 1977, at the wee age of 8, I saw twin suns setting on Tatooine and dreamed of visiting a galaxy far, far away. In 1987, I boarded the USS Enterprise NCC-1701D to boldly go where no one had gone before. In 1997, an old guy named Methos cast his kind of magic over me.

Many other shows caught my imagination -- Forever Night, Alien Nation, Babylon 5, X-Files, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Doctor Who (old and new), Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (old and new), Supernatural, Heroes -- but they never crossed that border between passive entertainment and passion. I watched them. I enjoyed them. I discussed them with other fans. But then I turned off the TV, shut down the computer, left the convention, and put away my thoughts of them.

Highlander: The Series, I was sure, would be my last TV obsession. The last show where the concerns and conflicts of fictional characters wandered into my thoughts at all times of the day. The last show where I watched an episode, then rewound the tape so I could watch it again -- right away.

But sure enough, right on schedule, 2007 arrives, and with it Yet. Another. Vampire. Detective. Yep, Moonlight.

The premise? Even given that there are no new ideas, "Beauty & the Beast -- With Vampires!" is less original than most. The writing? Middle-of-the-road. Eye candy? Meh, Mick's not my type... though he does have beautiful, expressive, sigh-inducing eyes... Maybe that means he's becoming my type? Er, I digress...

No doubt Moonlight is derivative. Nevertheless, it only took five episodes for Mick and Beth and their world to capture my heart and mind like no show has since Highlander. What is it about this show?!?
